So, you’ve booked the dream vacation or been assigned a job that entails a long overseas flight, and it dawns on you that you will have many hours confined in an airplane. How will you spend this time?
Nothing slows down the passage of time more than boredom, and a long flight can be a downright drag if you don’t plan ahead. Here we will share some tips on how to pass the time on a long flight and make your travel a lot more interesting and hopefully a lot more entertaining as well.
1. Electronic devices to the rescue
In this age of the electronic gadget, you can easily pass a few hours with the use of your cell phone or another device like a computer or handheld gaming system.
These devices open up a few possibilities for entertainment, from listening to music, watching a movie, or playing games. Using headphone will ensure you don’t annoy your neighbor, but you may want to offer to share the device if you’re looking for company and human interaction.
2. Strike up a conversation
Nothing passes the time like having a good old chat with someone, how many times have you found yourself just going to chat for a moment with someone and an hour or so later you realize that you should be somewhere else? The gift of gab can be a game-changer on a flight of many hours.
You will not only pass the time, but you could make a new friend or if traveling with a companion get caught up on everything you have missed. A bonus to striking up a conversation with someone new is that you may learn something in the conversation, like where they are from and why they are traveling, or something about a different culture the possibilities could be endless.
3. Bring some cards aboard
Or any other easily portable old school game. Some of the easiest ways to pass the time is a good old game of solitaire or a hand of cards with your neighbor. There are so many games that involve a hand of cards that you should easily be able to find one that both you and your neighbor can play.
This may also be a good way to break the ice and initiate a conversation with the person sitting next to you for the next fourteen or so hours. If you prefer to remain in your own space then you can play one of the many variations of solitaire and pass some time, put your headphones on and you can easily slip away for a few hours.
4. Catch up on some reading
Bring a book you have wanted to read but have yet to find the time to indulge in, or a few magazines that have caught your attention. You may even want to use your electronic device and let someone else do the actual reading for you through an e-book.
With many hours to pass, you could read an entire book or several magazines. If you choose, you could read some work-related reports or possibly even learn something new with an educational selection.
If you happen to be relocating or traveling for your work, you could spend this time reading up and studying so to speak about the new culture you are entering. This would be a great time to brush up on the new cultures and language so that it’s fresh in your mind when you arrive.
5. Get some Zzzz’s
Yes, you could sleep for the majority or all of the flight for that matter. Some may choose to sleep, and as we all know, this can be a great way to pass the time. With the hustle and bustle of daily life you may fall behind on getting enough sleep, and a long flight might help you catch up.
If you are thinking of going this route, you may want to make sure to bring along a neck pillow and an eye mask to help you shut out the distractions.
6. Go over your itinerary for your trip
The time you have in route may be a perfect time to put the finishing touches on your travel plans. You can go back over your travel dates and plans and familiarize yourself with locations using a map of your intended vacation spot.
If your traveling for work, you could make sure that you know where to go when you land and take a look at transportation options to and from your hotel. Planning ahead will help things to go more smoothly and help you keep to a set schedule.
It may be creative writing time. A long flight may bring out your inner creative writer, and writing can definitely help you to pass the time.
I myself find that I can spend hours writing, and it seems as though just a few minutes have passed. What I’m saying is that it’s easy to get lost in the creative writing world and you may learn that this is a new skill you didn’t even know you had.
There are coloring books that are for adults and are designed to help pass the time and reduce stress, sort of a Feng Shui sort of thing. These coloring books will draw you in and again allow you to express some creativity while also allowing you to unwind and relax.
9. Bring some snacks
Although this may also lead to some serious binge eating, sometimes a snack is a good way to pass some time. You can plan this ahead of time and opt for healthier choices aside from the options that the airlines offer.
10. Create a playlist of music
After you have played cards, talked your neighbor’s ear off and snacked till you cannot eat anymore put in your earbuds and listen to your favorite music choices. The nice thing about playlists is that you can create different music playlists to fit your moods.
You’ve heard the saying that nothing soothes the savage beast like music, well if you’re feeling anxious about the long flight, make sure that you create a playlist to help you stay calm and relaxed.
11. Use the flight time as “You” time
Take this time to get inside your head and go over some of the feelings and emotions that you have had to bottle up. This is a good time for some meditation and self-examination.
Feelings and emotions can often get overlooked and build up inside of us, so this could be a perfect time to take mental notes and sort out anything that has been nagging you mentally.
Starring out into space and unwinding can do wonders for your mental state, and a good mellow playlist could help keep you in your own private world.
12. Lastly- Just unwind and relax
I know that this seems to go without saying, but some people become very tense on a flight. Tell yourself it’s okay to relax and let go of everything that’s bothering you.
Being on an airplane means that someone else is responsible for your transportation and you can sit back and let the in-air staff pamper you a bit. For some, this may be the only time that you are the one being pampered far too often we are the caregivers and forget that we could use some attention too.
Enjoy the ride and the time you have aboard the plane. You will be on the ground before you know it and then life will begin again and that as we all know can be hectic and unrelenting even if you’re on vacation.
