Get excited ladies and gents, because today is that venerable holiday, Cinco de Mayo. Whether you’re observing the day of remembrance of the Mexican victory of France, or just really craving a killer taco and giant margarita, we’ve rounded up some of the ultimate places to get your fix around the globe.
Casa Azul – Bangkok
Believe it or not, there is a Tex-Men eatery in Bangkok. So if you need a break from all that coconut milk-rich street food, get thee to the bright blue Casa Azul for your fill or nachos, burritos and tamales.
Dia de Los Tamales – Chicago
The tamales peddled at Dia de Los Tamales are a far-cry from the masa snacks you probably know. These come from a chef-driven standpoint, which means you get varieties like coconut curry chicken, Buffalo chicken and Cuban pork. Best to order all, don’t you think?
El Rey – Washington, D.C.
It’s hard to miss El Rey, as it’s made out of primary colored shipping containers. Tex-Mex is the name of the game here: it’s all moreish tacos, tamales, tequila and cervezas. If the weather’s nice enough, they’ll open up the retractable roof to let the sunshine in.
Lucha Loco – Singapore
It’s all about gourmet tacos here, with flavors like chorizo con res and camarones, as well as refreshingly tart margaritas. The ambiance isn’t bad either – the al fresco seating strung with exposed bulbs and a neon sign that reads “tequila” really sets the mood.
Playa Takeria – Sydney
Jalapenos margaritas, infectious music and graffitied walls – including a massive impression of Frida Kahlo wearing a T-shirt and shorts – make this Sydney eatery a hot spot that you won’t want to miss.
Seven Lives Tacos Y Mariscos – Toronto
The Tijuana-style tacos at this joint put them leagues above the other Mexican eateries in Ontario. Here, only the freshest ingredients are used and tortillas are made in-house. Try the Gobernador: house-smoked tuna, grilled shrimp and creamy cheese. Mmm.
Tacolicious – San Francisco
There are few things simpler or fresher than two soft corn tacos topped with juicy, braised meat, cabbage and salsa. That’s exactly what you get at Tacolicious, where Mexico City-style tacos are served up and where you might just spy a Giants or A’s player hanging out by the copper-topped bar.
Tehuitzingo Mexican Deli & Taqueria – NYC
When you’re in Hell’s Kitchen and suddenly overcome with the smell of delicious, it’s most likely this place you’re smelling. This is a Mexican grocery stores that has a taqueria in the back. Yes, this is real, and yes, the goat tacos are incredible.
