Say what you will about men who care about their appearance being dandies, but we think putting some effort into how you look is never a bad thing. While there are tons of salons and spas catering to the ladies in The Lion City, there are a fair share of hip grooming spots that have popped up around town catering to Singapore’s menfolk.
The edgiest and earliest of the pack is certainly Hounds of the Baskervilles, an old-school, British-inspired barbershop with a hipster twist: it’s also a tattoo studio that often brings in well-known guest inkers and barbers. So whether you’re looking to rock a pompadour or invest in an impressive piece of body art, they’ve got you covered.
Over in Geylang is The Panic Room, where a welcoming, laid-back vibe awaits. Here, you can get a simple haircut or a full-on wash and styling, a quick beard or ‘stache trim, or a hot towel shave if you’re feeling fancy. They also have a well-stocked selection of grooming supplies if you’re more of a do-it-yourselfer.
Channeling a gentlemen’s club, Sultans of Shave is a classy joint that boasts a staff of London-trained barbers and offers luxe packages worthy of, well, a sultan. For example, their eponymous The Sultan’s Shave includes a facial scrub, pre-shave oil, a hot towel, a shave, a cold towel, a post-shave balm and moisturizer. The royal treatment, no?
More than a barbershop, Tiong Bahru’s We Need A Hero is a spa for men: you can have your hair cut, your beard shaped, your eyebrows threaded, your chest waxed and finish up with a relaxing massage. Plus, the pops of primary colors and manly décor like broadswords and moose antlers adorning the walls will surely appeal.
Located in what the staff lovingly refer to as “the attic” — meaning the second story space of a shophouse in Outram — the fellas at DeepCuts Barber’s are adept at haircuts and styling, straight razor shaves and full beard sculpting. These guys operates by appointment only, so be sure to book before rocking up.
Over at The Golden Rule Barber Co., you’ll find a wall full of guitars hanging above a handsome Chesterfield sofa, and a staff full of guys who look like they belong in a motorcycle gang. Here, the stylists specialize in creative design cuts and coloring services, and also host barbering workshops for those who want to try their hand at the venerable occupation.
