Frock-ing good shopping at Willow & Huxley

Located in the heart of Chinatown, Willow & Huxley is a veritable candy store for grown-up gals, boasting racks full of carefully curated pieces that will take you from boardroom to bar in a flash. Tucked away at the far end of Amoy Street, this beautifully renovated shop is a haven of tranquility with its sleek interiors and unobtrusive, yet personal service – it definitely beats the ubiquitous mall experience in Singapore. British co-founders Laura Sisterson and Susie Wallace bring a selection of beautifully merchandised, drool-worthy pieces by smaller international labels to Singapore.

As I step into the store and peruse the colorful array before me, I can already feel my heart quickening and wallet twitching in anticipation. These days, I’m all about versatility. The pieces I buy should not only be long-lasting (I’ve decided to ditch my weekly H&M shops in favor of quality over quantity) but they should also unique, and most importantly – versatile. That metallic sequin-embossed bandage skirt that can only be worn to a club? Out. The flowery tea dress that’s perfect for a garden party but nothing else? No more. It’s about shopping smart, and at Willow & Huxley it’s apparent that I’m going to be well catered for.

Take this black and white jersey skirt – paired with a slouchy printed tee and some leather t-strap sandals, you’ve got your weekend brunch outfit sorted. Substitute for a crisp silk blouse and heels, et voila: office wear. A slinky neon cami and some baubles: it’s Friday night and you’re ready to rumba. The Willow & Huxley gals are on hand to style you and suggest a myriad of options to transform your look with accessories like leather belts, chunky cocktail rings and bold necklaces to pull outfits together.

While high street honeys like Zara and Topshop can provide staple pieces, everyone and their mother shops there…which often takes the sizzle out of your samba. Willow & Huxley bring only a few pieces of each style in, so you can rest assured that you’ll be rocking your outfit solo. What’s more, Laura adores vintage and sources a small selection of items from the UK that are lovingly restored to excellent condition. If vintage is your thing, check in often as they get snapped up rather quickly.

An irksome aspect of fashion retail in Singapore is shopping during the “winter” months. When the four seasons of this country are hot, hotter, hottest and just plain mercury-melting, it’s galling to find racks of woolen trousers, cashmere sweater dresses and leather jackets that make you break out into a sweat just looking at them. Which leads me to another point – the art of layering is not just one for Melbournites or Londoners. When you’re living and working in Singapore it’s a steamy al-fresco trek to the MRT in the morning, then into chilly conditions at offices and malls so arctic that even the most die-hard Jersey girl would consider covering up. Willow & Huxley is weather-appropriate all year round. That means gossamer-soft jersey maxi dresses, breezy tunics, and a few cardis and silk long-sleeved blouses thrown in for good measure.

Boys are also catered to with a small selection of vintage-washed t-shirts and shorts that can be worn both in and out of the pool. It’s primarily weekend wear on offer and there are fab retro-style sunnies by the likes of Henry Holland to boot. You can lure hubby (and his Amex) into the shop on this premise!

All in all, Willow & Huxley is a fabulous one-stop shop with natty Scandi tailoring from Danish label By Malene Birger, quirky prints by Aussie import Finders Keepers, laid back boho-chic from Sam & Lavi, luxury jersey dresses from Rachel Pally, exquisite resort wear by Suboo and much more… Prepare to spend, spend, spend. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
