During the last week of every June, the Pride celebration takes over San Francisco, most notably with a fabulous parade that rolls down Market Street from Beale to 8th Streets.  But even if you’re not in town for the extravaganza, you can get a taste of Pride any night of the week at dance clubs like San Francisco Badlands and Lookout. San Francisco Badlands is in the heart of the Castro, often thought of as LGBTQ HQ. The homes in the neighborhood itself look prim and proper, but inside the club it’s all strobe lights and people fueled by strong drinks from the bar. Lookout is a smidge removed from the center of the scene, which means it’s small and more laid back, but still a great spot for dancing on a weeknight.

On the weekends, check out the Speedo sunbathers on the upper terrace at Mission Dolores Park, affectionately known as The Fruit Shelf. Be sure to visit the Spanish colonial baroque stylings of The Castro Theatre, which hosts LGBTQ community events and movie sing-alongs most nights.

Beyond these hubs, you don’t have to look very hard to experience San Francisco’s “love one, love all” attitude. Yes, the Castro is the historic center, but the community spreads far beyond — unlike many other cities that can still feel somewhat segregated. Here in San Francisco, it’s well represented in all corners, from City Hall, where same-sex marriage ceremonies take place, to Dogpatch, Sunset and Haight.

About The HUNT San Francisco Writer: A lover of bourbon and bonfires, Lauren Ladoceour is a food and lifestyle writer based in San Francisco. Her job is mostly to hang out with chefs and bartenders and then write about it for magazines such as Food Arts, San Francisco and Yoga Journal. But come Saturday, she’s working on her biannual Weekend Almanac. She fully believes life happens Friday through Sunday and the best way to experience it is to get out of the house and try something new.
